In days past you would never hear of such things as replacing your brake fluid. Now, with the introduction of anti lock brakes it has to be done. Failure to do so can cause faults within the ABS, Traction, and Stability Control systems of your vehicle.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic. That means that it absorbs moisture. In addition to absorbing moisture it also runs through copper lines and inevitably transfers residual or microscopically fragmented copper through the brake system.

This copper and water can cause the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) valves to stick. Once stuck, these valves cannot be serviced and require the EBCM to be replaced. This can range from $800 – $1,900.

Popular safety features of modern vehicles also use the EBCM for operation. For instance, Traction Control uses sensors at each wheel to determine if wheel speed is greater on one wheel than the others. If the speed is out of range, the EBCM will apply brakes to that specific wheel to prevent a spin out condition. This is extremely helpful in wet, sandy, or snowy conditions.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Keep your family safe and prevent large expenses in the future by doing proper maintenance on time. Schedule your service appointment today with Eagle Buick GMC in Homosassa, Florida!
